Panis Angelicus(생명의 양식)는 세자르 프랑크가 파리 성 클로틸드 교회의 합창장으로 일하던 시절에 작곡한 곡이다. 프랑크는 아마추어 합창단이 매주 예배 때마다 부를 노래를 작곡했고, 1859년에는 3성부(소프라노, 테너, 베이스)를 위한 미사곡까지 작곡하기에 이른다.
초연은 1861년 성 클로딜드 교회에서 이루어졌지만 큰 성공을 거두진 못했다.
이로부터 11년이 지난 1872년, 프랑크는 파리 음악원의 오르간 교수로 임용되었고,
이 곳에서 자신의 만족스럽지 못 한 미사곡에 붙일 "파니스 안젤리쿠스"를 작곡했다.
결국 이 곡은 프랑크의 가장 대표적인 선율 가운데 하나로 지금까지 전해지고 있다.
